Distinguished and Famous people from Narromine

🏏 Glenn McGrath

Glenn McGrath was born in Dubbo and raised in Narromine, where he began playing cricket before his move into Sydney grade competition. Selection for New South Wales in 1992 was followed by a Test debut the next year. He became one of Australia’s outstanding fast bowlers, building pressure through accuracy, persistence and a capacity to exploit small weaknesses. His later public contribution included work through the McGrath Foundation. The statue at Narromine commemorates that sporting and community association, with the town’s childhood role kept distinct from his Dubbo birthplace.

✈️ Nancy-Bird Walton

Nancy-Bird Walton visited Narromine during the early years of her flying career and returned to open the aviation museum in October 2002. The museum brought together aircraft history, memorabilia and thousands of hours of volunteer work. Her opening recollections included the practical business of clearing animals from landing grounds in earlier times. That detail captures aviation before a runway could be taken for granted. Her association is a documented series of visits and support for preserving the aerodrome’s history, within a much wider career promoting flying and opportunities for women pilots.

📮 Arthur Butler

Arthur Butler flew into Narromine from Cootamundra on 10 December 1934 carrying the town’s first airmail service. After a brief stop, the aircraft continued towards Charleville by way of Bourke. The route placed Narromine within a developing aerial network, where a scheduled aircraft could alter how quickly news and correspondence travelled. Butler’s brief stop was part of a scheduled service linking inland communities with mail moving across Australia.
